Exceptions to the prohibition can be made clear using a supplementary sign:

• ‘Except local buses’ for where it marks a local bus route such as a shortcut to a local tourist destination
• ‘Except permit holders’ where school or other buses may be entitled to pass through
• ‘Except for access’
• ‘Except for access to off-street premises’ to be used where something like a bus garage is on the road, so the road should be kept as clear as possible.

The supplementary sign may indicate time periods where the order doesn't apply continuously.
