Description:
Grevillea ‘Cherry Pie’ is a medium-sized, fast-growing shrub admired for its stunning cherry-red flowers and fine-textured foliage. This hybrid between Grevillea longistyla and G. elegans brings together vibrant colour, soft form, and extended flowering performance. Its nectar-rich blooms and attractive growth habit make it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens and ornamental landscaping.
Flowers:
Rich cherry-red spider-style flowers appear prolifically from autumn through spring, with sporadic flowering in other seasons. The flowers are highly attractive to birds, especially honeyeaters, and also draw bees and beneficial insects.
Foliage:
Fine, mid-green foliage with a soft, feathery appearance. The leaves create a delicate contrast against the bright flowers and give the plant an airy, light texture in the garden.
Fruit:
Small, hard grevillea seed capsules may develop after flowering but are not a significant ornamental feature.
Form and Size:
Rounded shrub, typically growing 1.5 to 2 metres high and 1.5 to 2 metres wide. Naturally dense and well-shaped, but responds well to light pruning.
Growing Conditions:
Performs best in full sun and well-drained soils. Drought-tolerant once established and tolerant of light frosts. Avoid heavy or poorly drained positions. Suitable for coastal and inland gardens.
Uses:
A great choice for feature planting, native garden beds, informal hedging, or wildlife gardens. Also well suited to attracting birds and adding vivid seasonal colour to mixed borders.
Maintenance:
Low-maintenance. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain shape and encourage further blooming. Apply a slow-release, low-phosphorus native fertiliser in spring. Mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Notes:
A colourful and bird-friendly addition to the garden, combining ornamental value with toughness. Performs reliably across a range of climates and soil types.
Companion Plants:
Complements other Australian natives such as Callistemon ‘Slim’, Leptospermum ‘Starry Night’, Westringia ‘Wynyabbie Gem’, and Banksia spinulosa.
Common Name: Cherry Pie Grevillea
