It has the fragrance and structure we want from the Langhe: raspberry, cherry, violet, dried herbs, and a little dusty earth, all wrapped in a medium-bodied frame with bright acidity and food-friendly tannin.

This is a red for dinner, not just sipping while pretending to think about dinner. Open it with mushroom risotto, roasted pork, sausage and lentils, tajarin with ragù, or eggplant Parmesan. It offers plenty of Piedmont character without the stern Barolo price tag or the “please wait twelve years” lecture.

About the Winery

Cavalier Bartolomeo is a small family estate in Garbelletto, a hamlet tucked beneath Castiglione Falletto in the heart of the Barolo area. The winery was founded in 1924 by Bartolomeo Borgogno, who learned to tend and vinify his family’s grapes from his father. A century later, the operation remains modest and deeply rooted, now run by Dario Borgogno with his wife Marriaje and their son Alex.

This is not a flashy producer, and that is very much the point. Cavalier Bartolomeo makes about 15,000 bottles a year, with a focus on traditional Piedmontese varieties and the kind of careful, hands-on farming that only works when production stays small. Their cellar has modernized over time, including more controlled fermentation and selective use of barrique, but the soul of the place still feels old-school: patience in the vineyard, restraint in the cellar, and a clear respect for the hills around Castiglione Falletto.

Enfant is one of the estate’s most charming wines. First recognized at a Brussels exhibition in 1930, it blends Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera into a red that feels unmistakably Langhe but less formal than Barolo. It gives you perfume, grip, fruit, and earth without demanding a three-hour decant or a philosophical crisis. Handy, really.
