Description:
Murraya paniculata, commonly known as Mock Orange, is a dense, evergreen shrub prized for its glossy green foliage and beautifully scented white flowers. With its lush appearance and fast-growing nature, it is widely used for formal hedging, screening, or as a feature shrub in Australian gardens. Murraya responds well to regular trimming, making it ideal for shaping into neat, structured hedges.
Flowers:
Produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers that resemble orange blossoms, emitting a sweet citrus-like fragrance. Flowering occurs throughout the warmer months, often followed by sporadic flushes year-round in warm climates.
Foliage:
Bright, glossy green leaves are pinnate and neatly arranged, contributing to a tidy and manicured appearance when clipped.
Fruit:
Small red to orange berries may follow flowering, adding seasonal interest and attracting birds to the garden.
Form and Size:
Typically grows 3–4m high and 2–3m wide, but can be kept much smaller with regular pruning. Upright and densely branching habit lends itself well to shaping and topiary.
Growing Conditions:
Thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained, fertile soil. Adaptable to a range of soil types once established, and tolerant of dry periods. Performs best in warm temperate to subtropical climates.
Uses:
Perfect as a formal or informal hedge, privacy screen, foundation planting, or topiary. Also suitable for large containers and urban landscapes.
Maintenance:
Low maintenance once established. Prune regularly to maintain shape and size. Fertilise in spring and late summer with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
Notes:
Not suitable for frost-prone regions unless grown in a sheltered position. May require occasional pest management, especially in humid areas.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Lilly Pillies, Gardenias, Viburnum, Buxus, and Trachelospermum jasminoides for a classic evergreen landscape.
