The 'Tor' Birchleaf Spirea (Spiraea betulifolia 'Tor') is a low-maintenance, compact deciduous shrub with four-season interest, including white spring flowers and brilliant fall foliage. Foliage: Features dense, birch-like dark green leaves that provide a lush backdrop during the growing season. In the fall, the foliage transforms into striking shades of orange, red, and purple. Flowers: In late spring to early summer, the shrub is covered in flat clusters of tiny, creamy-white flowers that are attractive to butterflies. Size: A compact, rounded shrub, typically growing to about 2–3 feet (60-90 cm) tall and wide at maturity. Hardiness: Exceptionally cold-hardy, suitable for USDA Zones 3–9. Light: Performs best in full sun (at least six hours daily) to ensure the best flower display and vibrant fall color, though it can tolerate partial shade. Soil: Easily grown in average, medium-moisture, well-drained soils and tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, including clay. It does not thrive in very wet sites. Maintenance: Low maintenance and deer resistant. It blooms on new wood, so prune in late winter or early spring if needed.
