Following the end of the American Revolutionary War, Johannes Reginald Beam emigrated from Germany to the United States, and eventually settled in Kentucky County. At the time, Kentucky County was still considered part of Virginia, and was overseen by a military governor named John J. Bowman. After settling in Kentucky, Beam began harvesting corn and set forth a family tradition by distilling the excess grains he harvested into whiskey. Since then, seven generations of the Beam family have been involved in whiskey production for the eponymous company (the company is actually named after James Beam, who rescued it following Prohibition). Knob Creek Bourbon was created by Beam's grandson, Booker Noe, who after joining the family business in 1950 was promoted to Master Distiller just ten years later. Booker talked like a true Kentuckian and was known for his contagious personality, and through his launch of the Small Batch Bourbon Collection the collection includes Knob Creek as well as Basil Hayden's, Booker's and Baker's bourbons he is often credited as the father of the small batch bourbon movement. Knob Creek Bourbon takes its name from the small water source, Knob Creek, that ran through President Abraham Lincoln's childhood farm. Booker's vision for Knob Creek Bourbon was that of an honest, quality bourbon that could meet the standards strength, flavor, care and patience of bourbon made before prohibition distressed the industry just decades earlier. Like Abraham Lincoln himself, Booker designed Knob Creek Bourbon to be honest, unwavering and full of character. In late 2001, Booker handed the tradition and responsibility of stewarding Knob Creek to his son, Fred Noe. Before passing the torch, however, Booker laid down several special barrels, which Fred patiently waited a full fourteen years before bottling. Started by Booker and carried on by Fred, as is the case with the entire Knob Creek legacy, Knob Creek 2001 Limited Edition Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the oldest whiskey ever released by Knob Creek, and the ultimate representation of this legendary father-and-son duo. Dad knew exactly what he wanted when it came to making whiskey, and I know [this] release would make him proud. Knob Creek 2001 Limited Edition Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey has a golden amber color and aromas of charred oak, vanilla, caramel and cooking spices. The palate is perfectly balanced between sweet and spicy, with notes of cream and nutmeg leading to a warm, complex finish. Format: Paperback
This is a shifter romance that features a non-binary wolf whose father, an Alpha, is stuck in the old ways of running a pack. In comes Heather, featured within the previous installment of the series, who doubts herself and has self-hatred due to her strained relationship with her mother. There are werewolves, witches, dominants and submissives. It's a slow building romance at first and then full steam ahead. For those who are triggered by self-doubt, you may want to pass this up as well as those who hate the mention of the phrase mate or my mate. It is a good second installment of the series with enough open ended content to have a third book on the horizon.

A ghost story with tons of heart
Format: Hardcover
On the surface, this is a story about two kids ghost hunting in the Appalachian woods. But in reality, it's a beautifully nuanced exploration of loving (but messy) families, opening up to those you love, kindling new friendships, cherishing and protecting the environment, facing challenging emotions head on, and so much more. I'm so grateful that highly sensitive children (and adults) will get to know this empathetic, peace-keeping main character. There are so many protagonists that save the day with their heroics, but bravery so much more often looks like Tennie. This book serves as a beautiful reminder for those of us constantly filling others' buckets that our own needs and wants matter too.

Delightful spooky middle grade
Format: Hardcover
I was thrilled to learn that Ash Van Otterloo was releasing a second spooky middle grade set in Howler's Hollow. Instead of the zombies we find in Cattywampus, this book stars a girl who can release memories and, it turns out, ghosts from objects. She needs to figure out what the ghosts are trying to tell her before it's too late.

Good middle-grade fantasy/mystery
Format: Kindle
The they/them pronouns made for difficult reading at times but the strength of the family a friendship dynamics more than made up for that. An adult reader may see some of the ‘surprises’ coming but typical middle grade readers probably wouldn’t be able to read between the lines well enough to spoil the surprise twists.

A book with so much heart
Format: Kindle
An absolutely delightful story with the perfect amount of spookiness. Light-hearted but also deep in its exploration of the ways we push down our own souls because of what we think others need.
