Australia has an extinction crisis that is quietly suffocating our natural world. The critically endangered Gilbert's Potoroo is the species next in line for extinction, with as few as 100 individuals estimated to remain in existence. Here, the polite potoroo is pictured with its main diet, native truffle fungi (Boletaceae), and floral species from its restricted habitat, the Showy Flame Pea (Chorizema reticulatum) and Sword Sedge (Lepidosperma species). This work calls attention to the fragile future of a species on the brink.
About the artist.
Charlie Maxwell is an Australian wildlife artist based in Brisbane/Meanjin, working at the intersection of art, environmental science, and wildlife ecology. Her creations are grounded in a deep commitment to the appreciation and conservation of the natural world. Through intricate and contemplative works, Charlie explores the often overlooked interconnection of Earth’s ecosystems. Her art invites viewers to look more closely at the environment around them, revealing both its quiet wonder and its fragility, while encouraging a sense of responsibility to protect and advocate for the delicate web of life beyond the human sphere.
