Plettenberg Bay is one of the southern cape coast's typical "J-shaped" bays, formed by wave action eroding the softer shale rocks between weather-resistant sandstone headlands. The bay is defined on the southern end by the rocky Robberg Peninsula separating the bay from the open Indian Ocean. The Keurbooms River flows into the bay and forms an estuary important for bird and marine life including one of the largest seagull breeding colonies along the South African coast. Originally inhabited by the Khoikhoi and San peoples, the first European contact was in the late 15th century when Portuguese explorers sailed past the bay, naming nearby features. In 1575 Manuel de Perestrelo aptly called it Bahia Formosa (Beautiful Bay) and the first European inhabitants were 100 Portuguese sailors marooned here for 9 months when the Sao Goncalo was wrecked in the bay in 1630. In 1763 the first European settlers were stock farmers and hunters from the Cape Colony. The new settlement was named Plettenberg Bay in 1778 in honour of Joachim van Plettenberg, Dutch Governor of the Cape Colony, who visited the bay. During this period the Dutch East India Company (VOC) established a timber shed here for storing forest products destined for Cape Town and the town later developed around small fishing industries, shipping, and limited forestry. During the 20th century, it transitioned into a holiday resort town, becoming a major South African coastal destination.
