This map is an original creation by our design studio, Africa Map Art, and is based on data from various up-to-date sources. Our default paper choice is the high quality 210gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish, which achieves excellent colour and resolution which is perfect for framing. A 260gsm satin photo paper is also available for those who prefer a different texture and finish. We welcome personalisation and customisation requests, such as highlighting of specific buildings or features, adjusting the colour scheme, or the addition of text and images. Saldanha Harbour, on the west coast of South Africa, is one of the continent's largest and deepest natural ports. Named after Portuguese explorer António de Saldanha, its history as a harbour dates back to the 16th century when its potential as a sheltered anchorage was recognized by European explorers. However, its development was initially hampered by a lack of fresh water, which led to Cape Town becoming the region's main port. During World War II, Saldanha's strategic location made it a crucial convoy assembly point for Allied forces. The harbour’s modern transformation began in the 1970s with the construction of a dedicated rail line from the iron ore mines at Sishen in the Northern Cape. Today, Saldanha is a bustling industrial hub, serving as South Africa's primary iron ore export facility and supporting a thriving fishing industry, as well as a naval training base. Its deep waters continue to make it a vital maritime gateway and a key driver of the region's economy.
