Brain Heart Infusion and Proteose Peptone provide a source of carbon, nitrogen and vitamins. Dextrose is the fermentable carbohydrate. Sodium Chloride supplies essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium. Disodium Phosphate acts as pH buffer. Addition of Sheep Blood allows for the isolation and cultivation of Histolama capsulatum and other fungi. The antibiotics Gentamicin and Chloramphenicol also make this medium selective for fungi by preventing the growth of unwanted bacteria. There is a choice of 3 sizes - 500g, 2kg, and 10kg.
PREPARATION: Mix 37grams of the medium in one liter of purified water until evenly dispersed. Heat with repeated stirring to dissolve completely. Distribute and autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes.
