Graaff-Reinet is the oldest town in the Eastern Cape and the fourth oldest in South Africa, founded by the Dutch East India Company in 1786. Named after Governor Cornelis Jacob van de Graaff and his wife, Reinet, the town was the centre of a short-lived burgher rebellion against the company's rule in 1795. Its strategic position in a bend of the Sundays River made it a significant frontier town and a major stopover for travellers and traders. Graaff-Reinet is now famous for having more national monuments than any other town in South Africa, thanks to a concerted effort to restore its stunning historical buildings.
