A thorough re-examination of Midway, one of the most pivotal battles in the Pacific Theater of World War II.
In April 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy's Combined Fleet reached the peak of its power. After delivering a devastating blow to the US Navy at Pearl Harbor in December 1941, it led the Japanese advance through Southeast Asia and wreaked havoc across the South Pacific. However, just a few months later, in June 1942, the US Navy managed to deal a crushing defeat to this formidable force near Midway Atoll, shifting the strategic initiative in the Pacific Theater to the US Navy.
Midway remains the most famous naval battle of the Pacific War, and one of the most mythologized. The common narrative, established soon after the battle and still prevalent today, depicts a heavily outnumbered American force seizing victory against overwhelming odds. This portrayal, however, is overly simplistic and, in many ways, inaccurate.
Pacific War expert Mark Stille offers a comprehensive analysis of this crucial battle, arguing that Midway was not a miraculous American victory nor a stroke of good luck. Instead, he suggests that the battle's outcome was largely shaped by the plans, personalities, doctrines, ships, and weapons of both sides, which made a Japanese defeat more probable. This new study provides an in-depth and detailed look at one of the turning points of the Pacific War.
