Het verhaal van Obaa Sima is bijna net zo iconisch als de muziek zelf. Oorspronkelijk in 1994 door Yaw Atta-Owusu, beter bekend als Ata Kak, uitgebracht op een gelimiteerde cassette in Ghana, verdween het album volledig uit het zicht. Na een zoektocht naar de artiest kreeg het album een officiële heruitgave en groeide het uit tot een wereldwijde cultklassieker.

Ata Kak’s muziek is een energieke, aanstekelijke mix van Ghanese highlife, vroege Twi-rap, funk en lo-fi elektronische dance. Gedreven door rudimentaire drummachines en synthesizers klinkt het rauw, vrolijk en onconventioneel. Obaa Sima wordt vaak geprezen als een visionair werk binnen de 'outsider' housemuziek, decennia vooruit op zijn tijd.
