The Euphorbia cereiformis, known as milk barrel cactus, is a striking succulent known for its barrel-shaped stems and ribbed columnar growth. This plant is popular for its unusual appearance and low-maintenance care needs.

Native to South Africa, this Euphorbia plant typically grows in clumps of upright, ribbed stems that resemble miniature cactus columns.

These stems are a gray-green to bluish-green color with prominent ridges lined with small, brownish spines (technically modified leaves).

Each stem can reach up to 3 feet tall, and as the plant matures, it slowly produces offsets, forming dense clumps that give the appearance of a barrel-like cluster.

The growth habit is symmetrical and highly architectural, making it an excellent accent plant.

Among the Euphorbia varieties, Euphorbia horrida, opens in a new tab (African Milk Barrel), is one of the more popular choices.

The Euphorbia cereiformis produces small yellow-green cyathia, near the top of its stems. These blooms are modest but still intriguing, especially when viewed up close. Flowering generally occurs in warm months under ideal conditions, including plenty of sunlight and minimal water stress.

When it comes to care, it thrives in well-drained  succulent soil, opens in a new tab and prefers to be watered deeply but infrequently, only when the soil is completely dry.

Indoors, place it near a bright, sunny window where it receives 6–8 hours of indirect to direct light daily.

Outdoors, it does well in USDA zones 10–11, where temperatures rarely dip below 30°F.

Pruning is rarely needed, but you can remove dead stems or pups to maintain shape or propagate.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Euphorbia cereiformis ‘Milk Barrel’ is a sculptural, easy-care plant that thrives with minimal attention and adds visual drama to succulent collections. Its cactus-like appearance, drought tolerance, and slow-clumping growth make it a favorite for collectors seeking architectural interest with little fuss. Whether indoors on a sunny windowsill or outdoors in a dry landscape, this Euphorbia delivers long-lasting appeal with minimal upkeep.

Don’t buy
Size: 5 in
I bought one at a store for my Rottweiler puppy, about 2 months ago, I bought one from here n about 5 minutes she had chewed the end off, they did send me another, no charge, well I received the other bone yesterday, she chewed a big split in it. Won’t buy anymore, I’m out the money, which isn’t much. Made in China also, no more. Going back to Kong toys, they do last with aggressive chewers. Don’t know why but the one I bought at the store is holding up real good.

Eh...
Size: 5 in
I had high hopes for these cause we have other spot brand toys that have last a long time. Unfortunately these just don't hold up to the test! My dogs had them broken in about 5 - 10 mins. They did smell good tho and my dogs went crazy over them before I ever got them out of the bag. Lol.

Smells too strong
Size: 5 in
My dog hates the way this thing smells. She tries to play with it, but the scent is too strong for her nose. I know it's the scent because she usually sniffs it two or three times in between trying to grab it with her mouth. She treats it like an explosive in her mouth and quickly moves away after spitting it out. She used to have a bone that looked similar to this (same material) that was unscented and she gnawed the hell out of it. My sister's pitbull spent the night and chewed that toy into bits, leaving my Yorkie mourning the loss of her once treasured bone. Please make an UNSCENTED version of this toy!!!!

If you were looking for a sign to buy this, here it is
Color: A) Small 2.5" Ball
If you are looking for a ball that can stand up next to a heavy, aggressive chewer.. this is a good choice. Our Pitbull literally destroyed any and every toy that she gets with the exception of one kind of kong ball. She tore through the kong Frisbees, any kind of squeaker toy, and the wobble wag giggle ball (she usually always ends up destroying these but it takes a few weeks. Today she beat her record and had her brand new ball destroyed within the first 30 minutes of us taking it out of the box). But, this ball she has not been able to destroy. I'd like to believe that the Kong ball she has and this ball are made of the same material. Because they are the only balls she can't ruin. And it's not because of a lack of trying. We have watched her sit there and chew with a side of her mouth for an hour or more, trying to make some kind of indention or tear in it and it just never happened. She loves to chew this thing, chase this thing, sleep with this thing. I most certainly recommend this ball. If it is I'ah proof then it is most certainly, 100% a durable ball and worth every penny
