FAQ GCSE Mathematics:
What grade is normally required for further or higher education?
Most institutions require a minimum of a grade 4 at GCSE Mathematics, although some institutions will require a grade 6.
What is the difference between Foundation and Higher tier?
If you sit Foundation tier the maximum grade you can achieve is a 5. The questions on Foundation tier will not cover some of the more complex mathematical concepts. Higher tier allows you to get a grades from 3 to 9 but if you do not get sufficient marks for a grade 3 you will be awarded a U grade for unclassified. Please ensure that you chose the correct level when completing the application process.
Do I need additional equipment for the exams?
All answers must be written in black pen. For GCSE Mathematics you may use a HB pencil for graphs and diagrams. You should also ensure that you have a ruler and an eraser. In addition you should bring mathematical equipment including a protractor, compasses. If tracing paper is required it will be provided.
A basic scientific calculator which meets JCQ regulations is the best option for GCSE Mathematics, if the calculator has any memory capacity this must be cleared before the exam and the calculator should have no formulae or other information on it.
Am I allowed a calculator for all of the papers?
For GCSE Mathematics there is always one non-calculator paper. This is Paper 1 for the AQA and Edexcel exam boards and Paper 2 for the OCR exam board. Please ensure that you do not bring your calculator to the non-calculator exam.
